Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Adept-Med the manufacturer of the Glassman Viscera Retainer, FISH?
A: Yes, Adept-Med has been the exclusive manufacturer of the Glassman Viscera Retainer, FISH for more than 40 years.
Q: Why is the Glassman Viscera Retainer called a "FISH"?
A: Many surgeons thought it looked like a flounder and started calling it the "Fish." The nickname eventually stuck.
Q: What makes the Glassman Viscera Retainer superior to other abdominal closure techniques? Why not use a wrapped strap retractor?
A: The retainer is pliable and will fold for easy removal reducing the risk of damage to organs and tissue. Strap retractors can have sharp metal edges that damage organs and tissue, wrapping can be left behind.
Q: What makes the Glassman Viscera Retainer unique ?
A: The exclusive ring, which indicates a Retained Foreign Object (RFO) and facilitates removal.
Q: How many "FISH®" retainers are in a box?
A: Ten, except in the case of the Jumbo, which come five to a box.
Q: What is your minimum retainer order?
A: A box of 10, except the Jumbo size, which comes in a box of five.
Q: Are the viscera retainers radiopaque?
A: The inner strip in the 3202, 3204, 3206, 3207, and 3212 is radiopaque. The 3200, 3201, 3203 do not have an inner strip and are not radiopaque.

A: No.
Q: Do your viscera retainers or Breast Implant Protectors (B.I.P.) contain any latex at all?
A: No.
Q: Does the packaging contain latex?
A: No.
Q: How are the retainers and B.I.P.s sterilized?
A: With gamma irradiation.
Q: Can the FISH or the B.I.P. be re-sterilized and reused?
A: No. The small holes in the devices can harbor pathogens, blood, etc. Post-ETO sterility testing was conducted in an independent laboratory. ETO failed to yield positive sterilization, and autoclave/flash sterilization will destroy these closure devices.
Q: How long are the viscera retainers / Breast Implant Protectors good for?
A: Two years from the manufacturing date. Each box has a clearly indicated Use By / Expiration Date.
Q: The retainer / B.I.P. is past its "Use By / Expiration Date." Can I still use it?
A: No. The packaging may not yield a sterile device when it has passed the Use By / Expiration Date.
Q: If the Use By / Expiration Date says May 2015, is the device good for the entire month of May?
A: Yes, the retainer / B.I.P. is good until the last day of the month specified in the Use By / Expiration Date.
